IN-PERSON CLASSES

WOLVES

British Lupine wolf dogs
Friendly, tactile and well behaved
Learn about wolf conservation
Donation made to Wolf Watch UK

More information

These “wolves” are actually British Lupine wolf dogs that are perfectly tame and friendly domestic pets as well as being perfect wolf look-a-likes – they have pure wolf in their bloodline from generations ago. They still retain their pack mentality, eat only raw meat and howl at the full moon – yet love cuddles and roll over for belly rubs!

Your in-person class will begin with a warm welcome from the Wild Life Drawing team, before being introduced to the “wolves” with a short talk from canine behavioural scientist and “head wolf” Natalie Lagstrom of Watermill Wolves. There will be a series of warm up drawing exercises before top tips and a drawing demonstration from our expert tutor, focussing on anatomical features and simple shapes. These classes are designed to be accessible for all abilities, and beginners will be fully supported. The class will progress with time for independent sketching as the wolves settle down, with creative support on hand at all times. Whilst you draw, you’ll be told all about current conservation issues facing wolves in the wild – plus the results of their incredible reintroduction to Yellowstone. Our wolf experts are full of facts and will be ready and willing to answer any questions you might have and of course, everyone can have a stroke and a cuddle at the end! Prize giving and mini-exhibitions are optional, but a brilliant way to conclude the class.

Watermill Wolves is a 12 strong “wolf” pack and acting team based in rural Sussex, lead by head trainer and devoted dog mum Natalie Lagstrom. Natalie is an experienced Animal Behvaiourist that specialises in canines and is a fountain of knowledge on both dogs and wild wolves, covering subjects including their reintroduction to Yellowstone, hunting laws, the development of domesticated dogs and the problems with pedigree breeding. Living in a large family pack in Natalie’s home, these intelligent and very well-behaved wolf dogs attend the classes together and use the opportunity to have a little snooze as well as an enriching social activity. The dogs do rise from their naps for about 10 minutes per class to perform some of their tricks using only positive reinforcement and plenty of treats. All insurance, health and safety documents and risk assessments are available upon request.

A proportion of your fee will of course be paid to Watermill Wolves, but an additional 10% will be donated to Wolf Watch UK – a non-profit organisation that provides a remote 100 acre woodland sanctuary in Shropshire for wolves that have been displaced due to zoo closures, dominance fights or excess breeding that would otherwise have been euthanised. They’re not open to the public, therefore keeping the environment for the wolves as close to their natural secluded habitat as possible. So your team will be helping wolves, just by booking a class!

DRAWING & FLYING DAY

Owls, Hawks, Eagles and Vultures
Interactive falconry experience
Draw rare and majestic birds
Located at Eastwell Manor

More information

New for 2023 is a real opportunity to leave work ‘at work’ and step into nature with a full day on location at Eastwell Manor in the heart of the Kent countryside. You’ll be meeting, drawing and FLYING our biggest and most impressive birds of prey – eagles, vultures and owls from all over the world.

Your day will begin with a warm welcome from the Wild Life Drawing team and some hot drinks and refreshments, before being introduced to the falconry team and of course, the birds themselves. You will spend the morning outdoors drawing all types of owls and raptors from life – each with their own individual personalities – starting with a full drawing demonstration from our expert tutors. Through conversation with our dedicated falconers, you’ll be learning all about the habitats, diets and expert hunting techniques plus any conservation issues affecting the species across the globe.

After a locally-sourced, seasonal lunch, you will experience the birds in flight with an awe-inspiring display by the knowledgable falconry team at Sky Birds of Prey. You and your colleagues will be in for some close encounters with the birds as they fly to your (gloved) hand, and you’ll be able to truly appreciate their strength, elegance and giant wingspans! If the heavens open and we get rained off, there is scope to run the same experience indoors.

Sky Birds of Prey consist of Paul, Ryan and a small team of expert falconers that have dedicated their lives to understanding birds of prey. They run flying displays, experience days and educational sessions. As well as looking after the birds in their care to the highest degree, they also work with the RSPCA and local wildlife groups to rescue, rehabilitate and re-release wild birds of prey that have been found injured or in danger. The methods used to care for these birds mirror nature, and each owl is flown free in remote areas of the Kent countryside every single day. When at the classes, the birds are either held on the glove or tethered to perches using traditional falconry methods in order to prevent the birds from flying around in unfamiliar surroundings – a bit like having a dog on a lead. The birds are transported in bespoke travel boxes, which keeps them calm and secure. At the classes we see many rouses (where the birds shake their feathers, a sign of relaxing) and often the owls tuck one foot up and have a little nap whilst being drawn.

A proportion of your fee will of course be paid to Sky Birds of Prey, but an additional 10% will be donated to the Barn Owl Trust – a small national charity dedicated to helping our native barn owls through their nest box schemes, collating research and data to assess the annual health of the owl population and creating ideal barn owl habitats through education and advice to farmers, land owners and wildlife enthusiasts. So your team will be helping native owls, just by booking a class!

MINIATURE PIGLETS

Adorable and memorable
Limited oppportunies across the year
Learn how to help pigs
Donation made to Farms not Factories

More information

Have you ever met a Miniature Piglet? Well, they are possibly even more adorable than you can imagine! At certain times of the year, litters are born naturally to the herd of “miniature” pigs on Pet Piggies Farm. We are able to draw the piglets at around 2 months old – when they are fully weaned and independent from mum – but before they get too big to travel. ‘Miniature’ or ‘teacup’ pigs is the term given to the smaller-than-average pig, originally created by crossbreeding pot-bellied pigs with the New Zealand Kune-Kune. Although the piglets will be small at this stage, we will be talking about the realities of owning ‘miniature’ pigs, the complex care they need and how large they can really grow! There’s a lot to love and learn about pigs in general, and our expert handler will wow you with plenty of fascinating facts. Be prepared to fall in love with these lovely little animals, and all for a good cause!

Your in-person class will begin with a warm welcome from the team at Wild Life Drawing, before a fact-filled introduction to all things pig from passionate expert Marc Cox. A good-sized run will be set up with floor coverings, hay, fresh water and fruit and veggie snacks for the piglets. After meeting the piglets, there will be a series of warm up exercises before top tips and a drawing demonstration from our expert tutor, focussing on anatomical features and building a drawing using simple shapes. These classes are designed to be accessible for all abilities, with creative guidance available throughout. Your team will sketch the piglets as they scamper, snooze and snack, and you’ll have the opportunity to ask any questions you might have. As well as being super cute – your drawing class will have an ethical focus; we will discuss welfare issues within the world of pig farming and the meat industry, and how to use our purchase power to make a difference. There is also opportunity to give the piglets a cuddle or a little belly scratch at the end of the class.

These animals will be attending with Marc from Pet Piggies. Marc himself works on campaigns that promote higher welfare within the meat farming industry and associated trade deals, and raises awareness of the ecological implications of factory farmed meat and the overuse of antibiotics. Marc runs supervised sessions at his farm where people can meet the pigs and learn about them, as well as some television and media work. None of Marc’s pigs are EVER raised for meat, and instead he rehomes them with families or individuals that have been thoroughly vetted to ensure the environment will provide the pig enough space, stimulation and love for the rest of their lives.

A proportion of your fee will of course be paid to Pet Piggies, but an additional 10% will be donated to Farms not Factories – a a non-governmental organisation that has been campaigning against pig factories for over 15 years. Using films and social media, the organisation publicises the damage caused by factory pig farming to animals, human health and the environment, and urges consumers to only buy local, high welfare and ethically produced pork. So your team will be helping pigs, just by booking a class!

These animals will be attending with two highly experienced animal handlers from Animal Workshops that not only care for these animals but also re-home other unwanted exotic pets or rescue animals. These animals will be in specially designed runs, with plenty of enrichment activities and hidden treats to keep them occupied and happy for the time they are with us. All animals go through a ‘Heath and Happiness’ test before attending any external events, and are rewarded with their favourite foods.

A proportion of your fee will of course be paid to Animal Workshops, but an additional 10% will be donated to South Essex Wildlife Hospital – a rescue, rehabilitation and public advice charity that takes in sick, injured and orphaned animals from the areas around East London, North Kent and South Essex. You and your team will sketch all the reptiles, and you’ll have the opportunity to try out new materials and ask any questions. As well as drawing, we’ll be learning all about reptile evolution and the unique adaptions that have allowed them to survive in just about every habitat on earth.

Snakes Alive is a reptile centre and sanctuary based in South End, and their entire collection of reptiles comes from rescued animals, receiving animals saved from the exotic animal trade or unwanted pets that have been rehomed. With a selected few of their animals they run educational sessions for schools, and their message is all about responsible pet ownership. When attending the classes, the cold-blooded reptiles are transported with heat mats and surfaces that have their own scent on them to make them feel at home. Animals like bearded dragons are unfortunately one of the top animals in the UK that are abandoned or given up, due to the improper or incomplete information given by pet shops, expensive equipment and overbreeding. This is a crucial part of our message during the classes that focus on reptiles.

A proportion of your fee will of course be paid to Snakes Alive, but an additional 10% will be donated to the Galapagos Conservation Trust – which is the only UK registered charity to focus solely on the conservation of the Galapagos Islands, one of the most unique and ecologically important, but vulnerable, areas in the world. The basic materials you need to take part are paper, a pencil, eraser and sharpener, but of course you are more than welcome to work in whatever materials you enjoy or have to hand. Please get in touch if you need advice on materials, we’re happy to help!

30% of the total fee for this class will be donated to Colobus Conservation, a not-for-profit organisation that works to protect local primates and the coastal forest habitats of south-eastern Kenya. The organisation has a rescue centre where they rehabilitate injured and unwell primates, and run projects in the area to reduce harm to local wildlife, like building aerial ladders to give primates a safe way to cross busy roads. They also have an education scheme and work with local schools to raise awareness of conservation issues. So you’ll be helping to save the monkeys, just by booking an online class!

During lockdown we wanted to create more opportunities to enable our people to connect virtually. With this in mind, we reached out to Wild Life Drawing to book in a Ocelot drawing class, as we thought it was a great way to spend a mindful and creative hour with colleagues. The feedback following the session was fantastic, so we didn’t hesitate to book another virtual class as part of our Mental Health Awareness Week activities this year, this time drawing some gorgeous Alpacas! The sessions offer a chance to take a break away from work and learn more about some incredible animals, all whilst picking up some drawing tips and chatting with work friends – we hope to join Jennie for more sessions soon!
